Author of Al Qaeda Magazine Reportedly an American Citizen

The principal author of a new online Al Qaeda magazine has a fairly unexpected background. CNN is reporting that the man behind the articles in the 70-page magazine (called Inspire) is in fact a 23-year-old American citizen who left the U.S. for Yemen in October 2009. Inspire is sort of a People magazine for the terrorist set, with articles on bomb-making and encrypting electronic messages, as well as interviews with the likes of notorious Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. The author, identified as Samir Khan, was born in Saudi Arabia; moved to Queens, New York, with his family when he was 7; and then eventually relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina. Law-enforcement officials said Khan attended meetings of the Islamic Thinkers Society when he was in New York, which aims to achieve an ideal Islamic society through “intellectual [and] political non-violent means.”

Yesterday Marc Ambinder uncovered what appeared to be a half-baked PDF magazine put out by Al Qaeda. It included statements from Osama Bin Laden, radical cleric Anwar al-Alwaki, Qaeda No. 2 Ayman Al-Zawahari, and a feature about how to "make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom." But today, Ambinder's Atlantic colleague Max Fisher created a list of five reasons why it's probably fake — including the fact that the magazine contains an "essay" by a terrorist who has been in Guantánamo since 2005. According to U.S. officials, the two most senior al Qaeda leaders in Iraq have been killed in a joint Iraqi-U.S. operation. The U.S. military called the deaths of Abu Ayyub al-Masri and Abu Omar al-Baghdadi in a Sunday morning strike “a potentially devastating blow,” and Iraqi prime minister Nuri al-Maliki said the deaths “broke al Qaeda’s backbone.” Vice President Joe Biden appeared at the White House press briefing today to praise the Iraqi role in the operation: “"This action demonstrates the improved security, strength and capacity of Iraqi security forces,” he said. So, there was an election in Iraq today. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became a 9/11 truther. And Al Qaeda's spokesman, Azzam the American, may have been captured! Here's all the stuff you missed while ogling the red carpet.

So, I don't know if you've heard, but there's this place called Iraq, and it had a parliamentary election today. As many as 100 bombs rocked Baghdad—killing at least 38—voter turnout was higher than expected, including many Sunnis, who mostly boycotted the 2005 election. [NYT]
Pleased with the turnout for Iraq's election, Obama said we can "continue with the responsible removal of the United States forces" as scheduled. [Reuters]
Al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn—"Azzam the American," for he was born on our fair soil—was captured! Unless, of course, he wasn't. A Pakistani official told CNN they'd nabbed the guy, but an American official said they had "no evidence" it was true.
