Name: Joan As Police Woman
Age: "I hit Freedom Forty on July 26"
Neighborhood: Industrial Paradise Greenpoint
Occupation: Entertainer, singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, violinist, positive attitudinalist. She'll be performing at the free Celebrate Brooklyn show next Thursday, August 5, at the Prospect Park Bandshell, with Holly Miranda and Metric.

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Can't do it in one — James Baldwin, Emma Goldman, and Ol' Dirty Bastard.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
Bereket.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
If on tour, search for the filthiest and/or most sacred part of the city, then hit the stage and emote like it's potentially my last show ever; if at home, stare at the sky, talk to as many strangers as possible and dream up dreams to make into reality.

What was your first job in New York?
To survive.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
A great Afro.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Yes, but not to every panhandler. Having a deep interest in what is moving about the human voice, both spoken and sung, if the asker has something that compels me I will probably give money. Honestly, I have heard some of the best singing from folks on the street who are down on their luck. Pain is clearly not comfortable, but can and does produce ravishing and wildly beautiful art.

What's your drink?
Wasser.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
Half the time.

What's your favorite medication?
Telling dirty jokes.

What's hanging above your sofa?
I am so tempted to write "my ex-wife," but truthfully it's a blue-bulb-lit wire star from a forties traveling circus and a mirrored portrait of Stevie Wonder, seventies-beaded-cornrow era.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
$100.

When's bedtime?
5 a.m.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
There is nothing at all wrong with either, and anyone who tethers themselves to anything that is gone is setting themselves up for pain. There is a magnificence in the old Times Square that can't be beat. My friend has a great story about the olden days — a midget choreographer, who worked for Bowie at one point, was on the strip there between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

Someone is saying "Quaaludes, Quaaludes," so he asks him, "Would you please give me a few of those, sir?" Unfortunately, the reported Quaalude salesman gave him aspirin instead. This choreographer, who went by the glorious name of "Gui Comme Toi," says "These are not Quaaludes."

So enraged was he to be questioned on the validity of his product that the salesmen punched him under the jaw, which lifted him up and through a plate-glass window of one of the many tiny shops that filled Times Square at that time (as well as joints like Hubert Hunky's freak show/flea circus).

Because our nation has been corporatized, Times Square now resembles Tokyo — which is an amazing thing in itself.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
I am thinking of that crazy peach-colored swirl he's got at the front of his hairdo and how much THAT must cost to get done, if anything.

What stylist is genius enough to make THAT up?

What do you hate most about living in New York?
Not enough time in the day to hate. Need the day extended to 33 hours so I can squeeze in a couple of minutes of good hating time.

Who is your mortal enemy?
My shadow.

When's the last time you drove a car?
Today. I own one. And my other car is a bicycle.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
If it's affected me I don't know about it and don't care.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
Times, but I generally stay away from the news.

Where do you go to be alone?
My crib.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
If they feel it.

Today.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
Well, I'm not selling my apartment anytime soon — unless you know someone from Moscow who needs an extra closet.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
All three.

Where do you go to be alone?
My summer house. In the winter.

What makes someone a New Yorker?

Name: David Alan Grier
Age: 54
Neighborhood: Upper West Side
Occupation: Actor, comedian, writer, producer, raconteur, gentleman of leisure. You can catch him performing two nights of comedy, this Friday and Saturday (July 23 and 24), at Comix.

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Andy Warhol.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
A chicken burger at the St. Regis hotel. It cost $35.00. I used to go at tea time and order it. It was amazing! The chef even gave me the recipe, and then they took it off the menu and I haven't gone back since.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
Sleep, watch TV, answer e-mails, work out, sleep, talk on the phone, and sleep.

What was your first job in New York?
Starring in a Broadway musical The First in 1981.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
American Idiot.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Never, and they always tell me that they are my biggest fans.

What's your drink?
Depending on my mood, a good glass of wine, or if things are looking dire, a Grey Goose dirty martini, shaken, served straight up with two olives.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
Every day! I love to cook. I have a food blog on WordPress called Chocolate Glutton.

What's your favorite medication?
Ibuprofen. It's non-addictive, over-the-counter, and always makes me feel like I'm being proactive in my pain management. But if I want to really have a party nothing beats a Vodka Vici (Vodka on ice with two crushed Vicodin stirred gently with the pinky finger). It tastes like shit, but oh what a feeling!

What's hanging above your sofa?
A Jean-Michel Basquiat.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
Nothing, 'cause I'm bald and I love to shave my own head. In fact, I have invested hundreds of dollars on pre-shave and post-shave ointments, liniments, and scented preparations.

When's bedtime?
When I say so.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
Old Times Square, hands down. Dollar kung fu movies, pimps, whores, runaways, drug dealers ... lovely! I would never willingly go to the new Times Square: It is filled with spotty, overweight high-school seniors with cheap point-and-shoot cameras. I love walking through carefully posed group shots on the streets in Times Square and ruining them.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
I did a radio show with Mr. Trump and two of his oldest kids — Ivanka, and Shrilanka I think their names were — and I thought he's done a very good job raising them. They were attractive, courteous, thoughtful, and funny, and they never hung out with Lindsay Lohan.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
Riding on the subway during the H1N1 flu scare. It was like riding in a giant used condom. I have never used more Purell in my life. Also, rude cab drivers. I hailed a cab once, and the cabbie stopped and asked me where I was going. I said "JFK." He looked me up and down and said, "I'll take you to La Guardia." Like I was looking to make a fucking deal!

Who is your mortal enemy?
Myself.

When's the last time you drove a car?
Two days ago, a rental. Brand-new Cadillac ... it was awesome.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
It has given me a feeling of latent despair. You smell it on people's breath, and see it hanging in the air all along Madison Avenue.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
Times for news, Post for gossip, and Daily News for cleaning my windows.

Where do you go to be alone?
My bathroom.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
There is usually a small birthmark found behind the left ear ... a mole in the shape of the twin towers.

Name: Matt and Kim
Age: 26/28
Neighborhood: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Occupation: Musicians. Band: "Matt and Kim." They'll be headlining the Village Voice's 10th Annual Siren Music Festival this Saturday, July 17, at Coney Island.

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Matt: LARRY DAVID. Of course.
Kim: JAY-Z.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
Kim: Man, the other day we ate at Dumont Burger. We had just gotten back in town and were starving. It was such a satisfying meal that I keep thinking about it. I do wish Bean was still around.
Matt: I think eating public school hot lunch every day for twelve years ruined my ability to tell good food from bad. I like everything (well, without meat).

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
Matt: Sleep, fly, sound check, eat, show, sweat, watch HGTV, sleep.
Kim: E-mail, but every day I get further and further behind. I still have stuff to answer from 09s, it makes no sense.

What was your first job in New York?
Kim: I worked as an art assistant for Jordin Isip and Melinda Beck. When they had a baby they asked if I wanted to be the nanny. I said, "I don't know anything about kids!" They said, "That's okay, neither do we."
Matt: Walkie-talkie manager at a Snoop Dogg concert.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
Kim: Are you talking "Broadway" the street in Brooklyn? 'Cause you can see some crazy stuff there. I guess if you're talking musicals, it would be Rent.
Matt: Hmm, Off Broadway I saw De La Guarda. It blew my mind.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Kim: Only performers.
Matt: Once someone said, "I'll bet you a dollar I can tell you where ya got those shoes." I said okay. He responded: "On your feet." He earned that one.

What's your drink?
Kim: Whole-milk latte or a Budweiser.
Matt: Brooklyn tap water every day!

How often do you prepare your own meals?
Matt: I eat dry cereal from a coffee mug every morning.
Kim: We used to prepare every meal at home, but we haven't had gas in our building for a year so we eat out all the time. They are supposed to turn the gas back on today, but I don't believe them.

What's your favorite medication?
Kim: Advil. Need it for bangover (headache from head banging too much).
Matt: Yeah, Advil like it's candy.

What's hanging above your sofa?
Kim: Three pieces of art: Brian Chippendale, Jordin Isip, and me (Kim Schifino). Is it weird that I have my own art hanging in our living room?
Matt: Yes, Kim, that is weird. It's like dancing to your own music, or wearing your own band's T-shirt.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
Kim: I don't know, I have Matt cut my hair. Usually I just say "I'll do the dishes tonight if you cut my hair." Shh, don't tell him if you think it is worth more than that.
Matt: I've been cutting both our hair for a while, but last week, the day before a photo shoot, I gave myself some bald spots on the side of my head. We had to fill them in with makeup. So maybe it would be worth some cash for a pro.

When's bedtime?
Kim: We never have a set bedtime. I guess usually around 3 a.m. But yesterday I was asleep by 8 p.m., so ...
Matt: Yeah, bedtime is whenever, but I did make a New Year's resolution, "AM IN 2010," a.k.a wake up before noon every day.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
Kim: The old Times Square. I like things on the dirty side.
Matt: Well, I wasn't around to see the old Times Square, but as two people who have gotten naked there, I feel like part of the club.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
Kim: It seems like he has a sense of humor. I like that in people.
Matt: Agreed. Anyone who's willing to make fun of themselves a little is okay in my book.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
Kim: Getting dripped on by air conditioners.
Matt: TRAFFIC LIGHTS.

Who is your mortal enemy?
Matt: The "KING": Burger King's mascot.
Kim: Whoever is talking in a movie theater.

When's the last time you drove a car?
Kim: I moved our van from one side of the street to the other last night. I hate alternate-side parking. Wait, maybe that's my mortal enemy.
Matt: I don't drive much, but the other day I was giving Kim a hard time for messing up a parallel-parking job, so she made me do it. And P.S., NAILED IT.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
Matt: and Kim:: Probably in more ways than we realize.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
Kim: Can we put The Onion up here?
Matt: Well, I do have the Times' iPhone app.

Where do you go to be alone?
Kim: The toilet. That is the only spot Matt and I don't go together.
Matt: I don't know the meaning of that word.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
Matt: The ability to honk within a millisecond of a stoplight turning green.
Kim: I second that.

Name: John Gallagher Jr.
Age: 26
Neighborhood: Boerum Hill, Brooklyn
Occupation: Actor/singer/songwriter. Tony winner (for Spring Awakening) starring in American Idiot on Broadway; playing a benefit show for Ars Nova’s 54/10 Music Marathon on July 18.

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Dave Van Ronk.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
The number 21 with pepper jack cheese instead of Swiss at City Sub.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I sweat.

What was your first job in New York?
A toy commercial when I was 15. I can't recall the name of the toy, but I remember the commercial had a psychedelic theme. Presumably because Austin Powers was very in that year.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
It was either Next Fall or A Behanding in Spokane.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Sometimes. I wait for signs.

What's your drink?
Bourbon. Irish whiskey also does the trick.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
Several times a week.

What's your favorite medication?
Advil.

What's hanging above your sofa?
The same map of New York that Liz Lemon has in her office on 30 Rock, a picture of a dam in North Dakota, and an Egon Schiele painting.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
I always let my hair go until I get a job and someone cuts it for me.

When's bedtime?
I'm filling this questionnaire out at 2 a.m. if that's any indication.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
I can't really say, since I've only ever experienced the new Times Square. I find the grit and the grime of the Taxi Driver–era 42nd Street pretty alluring, though.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
The guy did a cameo in Zoolander. I like that he's able to make fun of himself. I think that's an important quality.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
The occasional bout of claustrophobia.

Who is your mortal enemy?
I'm still mulling over a few candidates.

When's the last time you drove a car?
February in Los Angeles. I drove a rental into the wall of a rehearsal studio in Burbank. I thought I'd put the car in reverse.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
A lot of great small theaters and independent performance venues in the city have been struggling and shuttering.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
Times.

Where do you go to be alone?
The subway or my couch when it gets late.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
I don't feel like it's my place to decide. I grew up in a small town and count myself lucky to be living and working here.

Name: Zelda Kaplan
Age: 94
Neighborhood: Columbus Circle
Occupation: "Citizen of the World." I spent half my life relaxing and the other half crusading — I was a successful ballroom dancer and women's golf pro in Miami Beach in my 20s, a doctor's wife in New York in my 30s — and in my 60s and 70s I spent my time largely in Africa and Southeast Asia campaigning directly with local tribal government leaders for women's and children's rights. [Ed: She's also a highly recognizable New York City nightlife fixture.]

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Margaret Mead.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
The pan-seared branzino at Orsay.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I read books and newspapers. Many people turn a certain age and "check out," but that is not me. In my 90s, I am not able to travel as much, so I must read everything I can at home to remain aware of global change, which provides me great knowledge to empower people through daily conversations, and through my charitable efforts.

What was your first job in New York?
Selling advertising over the phone.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
I don't go to Broadway these days, but I used to love anything Helen Hayes was in, and the husband-and-wife team of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne was wonderful.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Almost never. Sometimes you look in their face and you know it might not go to the right place, but you have to give.

What's your drink?
Shiraz.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
Almost never.

What's your favorite medication?
I don't use medication, but Mia Morgan bought me a bottle of vitamins last year — I just realized I forgot to take them!

What's hanging above your sofa?
African carvings that I collected in situ from New Guinea, West Africa, and South Africa. Some of my joys of traveling off the beaten path.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
Anything over $30.

When's bedtime?
Anytime between midnight and 7 a.m.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
I haven't seen the new Times Square.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
I've never met Donald Trump, but I would like to. When I heard he had a low handicap, I thought maybe we could play a round of golf.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
The soot.

Who is your mortal enemy?
Death.

When's the last time you drove a car?
I gave up driving when I arrived in New York City in 1950.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
To my knowledge, it has not affected me. No one I know talks
about money with me.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
The New York Times.

Where do you go to be alone?
My apartment.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
Someone who really enjoys the energy of this city — and someone who looks forward to coming home!

Name: Bernie Kopell
Age: 77
Neighborhood: Living in Chelsea; grew up in Ocean Parkway on Church Avenue.
Occupation: Actor/writer. He'll be starring in the Off Broadway play Viagara Falls, which begins previews at the Little Shubert Theater next Monday, July 5.

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Jack Dempsey (who had a restaurant on Broadway). When I was a kid, my father took me to the fights at St. Nicholas Arena. One night there was a big fuss, and we realized the great Jack Dempsey came in. My father said, "Get his autograph." I was so nervous. I tapped him on the shoulder and he turned around with the sweetest smile and wrote 'Good Luck Son' - Jack Dempsey. I treasure that and have it to this day.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
It was a great treat to go to Lum Fung's Chinese restaurant on 52nd when I was young. It tickles me that right across from our Little Shubert Theatre is Ollie's, another terrific Chinese restaurant.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
Understanding that I'm lucky enough to be in this privileged business, I do everything I can to make our audiences' time with us fun.

Would you live here on a $35,000 salary?
Sure, I'd live at the Y.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
We flew in to see our pals Shirley Jones and her son Patrick Cassidy in 42nd Street.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
I give some, but my wife, the shiksa, gives way too much.

What's your drink?
Beer.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
I'm a bit boring in that I eat the same thing every morning, so I prepare that, but I do eat what my wife, the flame-thrower, makes for dinner.

What's your favorite medication?
Whenever I feel I could use a jet assist — of course Viagara.

What's hanging above your sofa?
Pictures of my beautiful sons.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
For years now my wife, Catrina, has been giving me free haircuts — so far it's only cost me a million five.

When's bedtime?
It depends on when the Viagara kicks in.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
At my age, we avoid the word old; we refer to it as Classic Times Square.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
He is the realization of the American Dream. And if I get points for sucking up, all the better.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
That my wife and kids are in California.

Who is your mortal enemy?
The Grim Reaper.

When's the last time you drove a car?
About a half-hour ago.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
It made me feel it wasn't a bad idea to keep the money under the mattress.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
Times.

Where do you go to be alone?
Doing paperwork in the john.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
The ability to ignore the racket, and enjoy the excitement and stimulation of this wondrous town.

Champagne. Did I say it takes the edge off?

Name: Peter Rosenberg
Age: 30
Neighborhood: West Side FO LIFE (Well the Upper West Side, really — and until I move to a new neighborhood, more than "life")
Occupation: Hot 97 radio personality, host of the hip-hop interview series Noisemakers at 92Y Tribeca (Diddy will be his guest on July 6).

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Tie between Woody Allen, Paul Simon, and Big Pun. I would love to have Woody and Paul on Noisemakers one day — we could re-create that scene from Annie Hall. Amazing.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
Food is the best thing going in this town, so that's very tough. Chin Chin, maybe? Or a BBQ chicken burrito at Harry's? Flor De Mayo half chicken with plantains?!

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I make fun of rappers that I love and hate, do some news, and generally act like a witty buffoon.

Would you live here on a $35,000 salary?
If I was still on Hot 97, yes.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
Fela! ...

Do you give money to panhandlers?
My Jewish guilt always makes me give money to panhandlers if I have it, but I would rather give it to people who play music.

What's your drink?
Diet Coke, or if I'm drinking, which is rare — a Lebowski (white Russian).

How often do you prepare your own meals?
I cook turkey burgers now and then, but more often than not I eat out, or my beautiful shiksa cooks for me.

What's your favorite medication?
Marijuana.

What's hanging above your sofa?
Nothing, but over my turntables is a beautiful tapestry that my dad picked up in Israel.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
Over twenty bucks.

When's bedtime?
Unfortunately, almost never before 12, even though I have to be up by 4:30 a.m.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
My parents never even took me near the old Times Square. That said, I don't love the new one either, beyond how it looks in photos at night.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
He has negatively affected WrestleMania more than once.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
That summer stench.

Who is your mortal enemy?
I don't want to give these guys any light, so I'll just say D.J. **** and Glenn Be*k.

When's the last time you drove a car?
When I was back home in Maryland a few weeks ago.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
Big-time. Big-time. My whole portfolio, you know — went pshhh — like, all of my big stocks and bonds and stuff went like, woooooooooo. You know when you're a big investor like me. I read The Wall Street Journal and keep my eye on the Nasdaq reports. I watch MSNBC and look at the numbers on the bottom. I have a TI-82 calculator just for situations like this. Buy low, sell high. You know what I'm saying.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
The most surprising thing about New York is that most people read just absolute shit on a daily basis. It's almost disgraceful. THAT being said, I do too. The Daily News. Sorry, Dad — the Times takes too long at 5 a.m.!

Where do you go to be alone?
Outside in front of the radio station on Hudson Street. It's not really alone, but nowhere in this city is really alone.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
The need to eat like a fat pig really late at night.
